And So It Goes (Again!)

I'm ready, I'm set, I'm going to go!

It's finally here. In seven hours' time we're going to rock up to the airport, continue our routine of existing in and out of terminals, flights and severe stretches of time zones / cuisines / barges of advice (thanks y'all but seriously, we're throwing out the guide books and betting on where the wind blows).

The detour back home then Perth for wedding duties then back then Penang then back got my entire biological alarm clock on meal times, sleeping times, and just about everything in between all spiced up and topsy turvy - I really just want to get on the plane and get started on the epic journey that hubby and I had been looking forward to in marking year 2010 as one of the most memorable years of our lifetime.

So, what got squeezed in between these few days (sometimes it did feel like WEEKS to no end) of mad rush of getting things / paperwork / photocopying / liaising with governmental bodies, lunches and more eating at families', forgetting and remembering to-dos by priority (it's survival time) and farewell hugs and wishes? Vaccine jabs, traffic and parking nightmares, saying goodbyes to our mutts, spring-cleaning, remembering to stay sane, fixing the archaic filing system, dealing with local politicians that should really be retired (last century), learning about family sizes and their peculiarities, and the list goes absolutely on...

You find out that Blue Label is indeed restorative on the faith, that you can stop at three (and it isn't whiskey I'm talking about), how much I miss my German Shepherd named ahem, Whiskey (God bless) and that you got to hit rock bottom before you come up for good. How things can be nipped at the bud, that all may mean well and you can chuck it away if it ain't, and that breathing is really good for you. Plus at times, your instincts are really better than what the doctor prescribed (particularly when it comes to ridding pus from your finger).

And cutting your hair does indeed rid you of old baggages. Okay, can I say it? I love my asymmetrical bob. Did I just say it?

Finally, backpack's zipped up, hung my Nazar Bonjuk (Turkish good luck "evil eye" charm, given by my sis-in-law's parents - thanks heaps, I love it!) and ticket to Guilin clutched. We've no plan except to make our plan along the way once we enter China. Probably find our way to Tibet, then somehow in between somewhere fun and there, definitely Xinjiang and later get into the entry point into Central Asia, hopefully weed our way into Iran and then Turkey, Egypt, Africa, and to rock out hubby's birthday in South America.

I want to say watch this space but am afraid that China's censorship and sensitivity to the "highly compromised" Blogspot website means only one thing - that I will be only able to post any travel updates when I can worm my way out of the Great Firewall of China. So folks, rest assured that you're on my thoughts always, love and hugs, and in the style of Terminator, "I'll be baaaakkkkkkk"...

Me, Viv - signing off, until next.

Backstage Reality

After 120 days, 5,000km of train time, 2,200km of prayers on the roads, a humid 75km boat ride, 90mins of flight and countless haggling with auto beanies, I finished my 500th cup of chai and excused myself from the grand dame named India.

It's been a good close to a month break since we arrived via a noisy and eventful flight back home, only to repack and join my family for my little brother's wedding in Perth. Besides reacquainting myself with the great whites and some reds of my ever favourite Margaret River, I indulged so very little bit in some lamb and great Australian clear blue skies that were always a treat. Down Under, the horizon did look a tad more special. The wedding couldn't had been more special and I was very moved by some poignant things that I never thought my brother (he was still that little lad with the sad puppy eyes all these years!) would say to me. Bless them, I think they will enjoy this thing called marriage very much, and that they make an adorable pair too didn't hurt! This was a wedding that felt very much that everyone in the room loved these two so much and that none of the speeches were a drag. Plus the food and wine were actually stunning. Threw in an evening sunset by the waters, it was very hard to forget such a magical day.

And now we're filling up PRC's visa application forms, back home in a hot and windy Malaysia. The next round of our continuing journey would be the Big Kahuna. It's going to be a stretch and we are going with absolutely no guide books. Yes, no LP, no RG. Just a good map and maybe very little Internet usage. The unknown holds the greatest lure. In looking at the many comments we had been getting, many had assumed that we're two "lucky lot" with "loads of cash". In a way, I agree with the former, but lucky more so in being blessed but also due to the reason that we prepared and decided for this opportunity and executed. We certainly didn't sit on our heavy bums and waited for the sky to land on our laps. I disagree with the latter. Yes, budget but it isn't that we are cruising on a luxury liner. It isn't that we are staying on a floating yacht. There is the odd time-out at a resting abode that actually had automated flushing systems but most of the time, it is well and truly at the mercy and charity of life.

This arvo I took the initiative to look back at the many moments - some candid, some posed (!) - of the scenes behind the lens, of Yours Truly working through every moment in the now. Some days it was hard work, squeezing into tight alleys, standing on rubbles, dodging a potential spit from a drooling camel, some days it was pure bliss watching the world go by with hubby. As always, it is him, my angel who always find delight in portraying me through his lens. Thank you honey, you rock my world so good.
